SKILLED INDEPENDENT MIGRATION - SKILLSELECT

Whether you're inside or outside Australia, SkillSelect is an online application process used by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to manage Australia’s skilled migration program. Skilled workers and business people interested in migrating to Australia will be considered for a skilled visa after submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect.

All EOI’s are considered and those successful are issued with an invitation to apply for the visa they have expressed an interest in. SkillSelect covers the subclass 189, subclass 190 and subclass 489 skilled visas as well as the subclass 132 and the subclass 188 business visas. The subclass 485 Skilled Graduate visa is not part of SkillSelect, but is also a skill based visa and for that reason we have included the Subclass 485 visa in this section.

The SkillSelect Subclass 189 Visa

The Subclass 189 visa is a Skilled Independent visa that you can apply for independently. With the 189 visa you are not reliant on an employer or a state to nominate you. You can live anywhere in Australia on a 189 visa. You must have an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List, have a positive skills assessment, have the required level of English language skills and score at least 60 points in the points test at the time you lodge your EOI.

The SkillSelect Subclass 190 Visa

The Subclass 190 visa is a state nominated skilled visa. You must have an occupation on the Consolidated Occupation List, be nominated by a State or Territory government, have a positive skills assessment, have the required level of English language skills and score at least 60 points in the points test at the time you lodge your EOI.

The SkillSelect Subclass 489 Regional Sponsored Visa

The Subclass 489 Regional Sponsored visa is a provisional visa that provides a two step pathway to Australian permanent residence. The subclass 489 visa has two options:

  • State or Territory Government nomination;

or

  • Sponsorship by an Eligible Relative living in a Designated Area.

Holders of a subclass 489 provisional visa can transition to a subclass 887 permanent visa after a qualifying period.

Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa
